Anyone who has debilitating attacks of panic is looking for self help for panic attacks. No one wants to run to the doctor over any situation, that they can handle on their own. Meditation is another great way of dealing with panic attacks. Center your mind and concentrate on what is important in life. Even when you have good reasons to panic, meditation will help you control these feelings in a very natural way.
Look at the foods you eat. If you stay all hopped up with too much sugar and caffeine, this can affect the way in which you handle your problems. Caffeine can even increase your blood pressure. This can definitely help bring on a feeling of panic.
Making certain lifestyle changes do help get the panic attack under control. If you have certain situations, that you panic in, then see if a friend can go with you enough to get over this fear. Do you lose it when you are in a crowd for instance? Have a friend go to events with you that are going to have crowds. They can help you understand that you are safe. Staying away from the crowds will not keep the panic attacks from occurring. The only things that helps is learning you are safe in a crowd and that there is no need to panic.
Other lifestyle changes can be things like not watching depressing TV programs that can upset you. The evening news is often filled with violence, and if you panic over not feeling safe this could set you off.
Not all panic attacks have concrete causes though. Sometimes you can just get in a panic for no apparent reason. These are a bit trickier to handle on your own. You can try all the methods mentioned above though and see if these methods will give you relief.
It is just important for you to know that many self-help methods exist to give you relief. You don't have to settle for taking medications or going through endless therapy sessions. Try all the self-help methods first and you may find that you never have to consult a doctor at all.
Only seek out medical attention if all other self help for panic attacks fail to give you relief. But many new methods are being discovered as time goes by for helping yourself get rid of these attacks.

I have never had a panic attack, but have dealt with depression on a personal level, so I understand your take and some of the advice you offer is applicable to depression as well. Thanks.
